This was kinda of let down after reading the After series. Very slow start and ended with a cliff hanger.

Another stellar book!

I really enjoy when Ms. Todd writes with a military spin.  She gets it!

The Brightest Stars is the story of Karina and Kael, but it's also so much more!

Karina is the product of her environment, her parents divorce and being an Army brat shaped her into the person she is now.  She is trying hard to break from her past and is well on her way, still with some bumps but she is trying. The only person she really trusts is her twin Austin, and he's a hot mess.

Kael is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma.  He is a soldier, he is just returned from deployment and is injured.  But who is he? Karina, despite her trepidation, wants to know more about him. She becomes addicted, almost obsessed with Kael and that scares her.

This story starts with sadness, but we won't get the full explanation.  You will be guessing throughout the book.  In fact when I finished, I went back and read the first couple chapters to see if I could figure it out....I couldn't.

The secondary characters are just as important as the main ones! Make sure you don't just fly by them.  I got the feeling there is more at play than just complimenting the main characters in this story.

The ending, whew...well read it and find out! It threw me through a loop and I am hoping that Ms. Todd will grace us with another book in this world she created.  I would love to read more!

This book is one you won't be able to put down until you finish it and then it will leave you hoping for more!

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I have to say it is a very in depth story that makes you feel so much. We start out of the gates with a starting of 2019 then we are transported back to 2017. When we get into 2017, what starts out as a random meeting, ends up being something intriguing and twisted that makes you wonder what is going to happen! While Katrina is young, she knows how the world works in a while with having lived the military life. But she also has a naivety about her. Then you have Kael who is a real mystery. But the one thing I adored is how she brought him out of his shell. While the time is short, the author really goes into depth of how things are playing out. But what got me is that ending!! Please tell me there will be a second book because I need some answers. I need to know what is going on between Katrina’s father and Kael and how they are tied. What will happen between Kael and Katrina. So if you want some raw angsty moments, I recommend this one. It is a emotional ride trying to navigate the aftermath.
slow-paced

I don't know if it's because I'd already read this in its original form years ago or what but I just did not click with this one. The story just seemed to drag so unbelievably slow with so much extra description and time passage that lent nothing to the plot.

Every chapter was exactly the same with Karina going to work, massaging the same people over and over again, her and Elodie switching shifts and her running into Kael until finally he started staying there. And also, their breakup felt so dramatic considering how little time they were together and furthermore the fact that Karina has openly admitted she knows nothing about Kael but still becomes this stoic, shell of a person without him. It didn't make any sense.

Since I did read the original Brightest Stars novel there were a lot of things that came back to me as I read, specifically the plot twist at the end involving her brother that made the ending pretty lackluster for me. In all, I probably could've given this one a skip but I wanted to ensure I had all the neccesary information to continue reading the trilogy as it's written.

My hopes are still fairly high for the next one as it'll be new content completely and we won't have to spend so long setting the scene rather we'll be able to jump right in.

????? The book ended but literally none of the loose ends were tied up. It feels like this should only be halfway through the story. And there’s a prologue with characters meeting up for the first time after two years, but then that’s never addressed again??? So freaking frustrated by this.

I absolutely loved this book; I thought that the characters were really complex, and all had something going on which was different. I really enjoyed the realism that was behind the mental state of the soldiers coming back from war. However, I will say that I really wanted to give this a 4.5/5 because the ending was disappointing because they share an on again off again relationship that left me slightly annoyed after finishing it. Even with this I will still purchase the second novel and read it. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

This is my first read by Anna. While this one was ok, I'm not sure if the story is strong enough for me to continue. I think I wanted more of a connection between Karin and Kael, but it could just be my preference. I do have a few others I still would like to try though. Brooke did a great job narrating.
