I am all for dark romance but this was over the top. There was definitely room to focus more on the story which was a good one but they made it all about the sex-which is fine but I feel it took away from the book.

Second time trying to read this book, the first time I DNF, this time around did the audiobook and the book at the same time. Nothing changed the books is mediocre at best, the writing was terrible whit a bunch of spelling errors.

Read at your own risk as spoilers lie ahead.

CWs: nonconsensual sex, physical abuse, rape, pedophilia, child trafficking (and more not talked about in this review but listed in the book)

If I could give this book 0 stars, I would.

The writing was...BAD and I highly suspect this was written with the help of AI. There were also AI illustrations throughout that were...UGLY.

So, how was the writing bad? Let me direct you to some quotes so you can see for yourselves:

"Ow," Aiden hisses. "I was just getting you pudding," He snaps, the chocolate dessert falling..."

"Roman," A voice cuts through the din.

St. Clair does not know how to use dialogue tags properly. It's a SIMPLE writing rule.

"Now is not the time for moral high ground, Roman. At least I've never sullied an alter server and made the mistake of falling in love with her," He snaps.

Here we go again with the "snaps," showing a very limited use of vocabulary regarding emotion (there are more throughout). There is also the use of "hisses" as if they are all snakes just merrily slithering along to show their discontent or annoyance 🙄 And the overuse of palatable has made me strike this word from my own vocabulary.

I also did not like how the story was told at times with scenes being repeated due to the shift in perspective i.e. Eden at the lake, while Roman is at the bar. It is used to fill the gaps for us readers, but honestly, this would have been a great use of just TELLING us versus a page worth of repeated dialogue from previous chapter. This style of writing happens at least 3x throughout the story.

Now, for the content itself...I had issues with the main "romance" between Eden x Roman. I don't want to call it a romance because Roman led with his sexual desires first and foremost, especially when he "rescues her" only to 🍇 her in his car. She does not say no, nor does he asks, and I guess that's where the nonconsensual sex content warning comes in 😒

(Upon reflection, for majority of the book, every single meeting they have leads to sex. He is not interested in her besides how she looks and to me, that is not romance.)

It gets even worst though...as we keep reading we find out that Roman HAS MET HER BEFORE. 6 WEEKS PRIOR to the first chapter. AND HE KNEW SHE WAS 🍇 AT COLLEGE.

"I was 🍇...He bruised my ribs, broke my collarbone..."

Roman knowing her trauma and proceeding to commit sexual acts without her consent is major 🚩🚩🚩 He is not an mmc you root for and instead he is one you are yelling at to GET AWAY FROM HER.

The men portrayed in this novel are vile, masochistic, hypocrites. There is no man, with the exception of Echo, who is good. Eden's dad is a POS, high righteous hypocrite who is a pedophile. Luca, who could be good is not, doing a complete 180 personality shift that would give Dr. Jekyll a run for his money. And even Aiden, who I give some grace to, was a bit of a 💩 head to Eden due to the physical abuse dealt by their father.

The way that Catholicism is portrayed by St. Clair is 😐 There are bible quotes at the end of most chapters, which mostly aligned to the them of that chapter. But often times, they felt like placeholders with no relation to the events of chapter. The men, as I stated, are 🗑️ with no redeemable qualities; the women are subservient and are portrayed (by the author) as "whores" in relation to Roman, and then you have an underground child trafficking ring run by the men of the church with the priest completely complicit.

There are two things I agreed with Roman on:
1) his thoughts of David Faulkner and
2) burning the church to the ground

Overall, if you are looking for dark romance with substance, Forgive Me Father, is not the one. You will be diving head first into trauma porn, the worst I've ever read due to writing, glamorizing 🍇 scenes, and non-existent romance.

Not at all what I expected. The subplot was surprising and enjoyable

I was so so excited to read this after seeing the snippets shared by the author on tiktok.. it seems she shared the best lines bc for me, it fell so flat. personally, this felt like a drag the first 90% and random plot thrown into the very end for a twist, that is wrapped up and solved in like 10 pages. this would be a great dark romance (per say) for beginners or someone looking to dip their toes in, but not for someone well versed in dark romance
