This was my first book by Fiona Davis and it was a pretty great first read by her. I especially loved the way she intertwined the storylines from 1919 with 1966 in a way that moved the story forward and worked seamlessly. Despite it being a pretty slow build up, this way of weaving the two story lines to have it finally connect altogether made it really worthwhile and had me glued to the pages. I also appreciated the diversity of the character’s background, especially for it being a historical fiction. The ending felt subpar compared to how the rest of the story was written and was rushed but it was still a satisfying ending.

There are two time periods that are flip flopped between chapters. One time period takes place in 1919 right after the Spanish Flu and follows a women named “Angelica” Lillian. She is caught up in a scandal and find refuge as Hellen Fricks secretary. The other time period takes place 50 plus years later and follows a newly discovered model. She goes on scavenger hunt with an intern at the Frick House, which is now a museum. The two time periods characters end up colliding! This was a very average historical fiction read.

My first 5 star review in a long time! I enjoy the HBO show 'The Gilded Age' and this feels like an episode. The page length surprised me, as I devoured the book so quickly. It has drama, intrigue, and high society... a few misleading potential plots obscure the real story which isn't revealed  until the book's final act. I found the resolution satisfying and the balance of the more modern girl and the historical perspective informed each other beautifully. A beautiful novel, made even more fascinating by it's ties to reality.

Ok, don’t sleep on this historical fiction!! I had this for a while before I eventually read it, and I’m sad I didn’t sooner. It was really, really fascinating.

It’s a mix of historical fiction and a treasure hunt. It’s tough to explain, but really good.

It’s also a book that I had no idea was based in reality until the authors note. Maybe if I were from NY I may have recognized the Frick name, but my uncultured Midwest self did not.

I liked both the timelines, and was rooting for all characters. Plus, I really enjoyed how they all intertwined at the end.

Oh, did I mention there’s also a murder mystery in this?!?! Took me by surprise, the plot point. However, the unraveling was fairly obvious.

The way this story is weaved is really interesting. Will be reading more from this author!

I enjoyed every minute of this well-written, well-researched historical. Simply a very interesting story all-around. I especially enjoyed it because it evoked so many personal memories of wonderful hours spent at the Frick Museum when I was young.
