Despite feeling very meh about this book, it was refreshing to read something that was easy to jump into. Like, at no point did I have to go back and re-read a passage out of confusion. It's a straight forward story told in straight forward words... it never tries to embellish anything... or really tries at all? No risk, no reward sorta sitch— this book just falls flat. I was intrigued in the beginning and expected for it to build, but as time goes on, we never get to know the characters. They just remain 2D and this makes them neither lovable or hatable... everyone's just sorta there. Joshua discussing his experience in white America felt particularly cringe-y cuz it feels like someone who hasn't experienced racism created a character to say what she, the author, thought she ought to say? It's mainly just telling, not showing and doesn't dig into identity/Othering in a meaningful way. Anyway, the ending is what's really dragging this book down for me. I just don't understand why she chose to wrap everything up so neatly??? To the point that it's kinda shocking cuz it's just soooo Hallmark and cliche in a way that feels almost like, taboo. WHICH honestly this could be a good Hallmark movie lolol like it's an interesting idea that was executed in a boring way. It feels like.... not the FIRST draft, but certainly not the last

The most interesting part of the book to me was the history about the Frick Museum in NYC - I can’t wait to visit the museum one day! The story was just okay, and didn’t really hold my attention. The characters annoyed me  a bit, and parts of the story felt very predictable.

This story was quick enough, but I was not very captivated by the mystery. It did make me want to visit the Frick.
