Book of the Month Club: January 2022
PopSugar 2018 reading challenge #48

A wonderfully written historical fiction novel that follows two separate timelines, merging them together at the end. The main story is about a beautiful woman named Lillian, who is a muse to many sculptors in New York. She's gorgeous, poses nude (but, it is art, not porn), and is well-known which is why it is pretty bad when she gets caught up in a murder scandal. She hasn't murdered anyone (her landlord has) but she's getting drug through the mud, so she runs away. In the process, she stumbles into the position of being a personal secretary for the Frick family. Agh! This is where all the drama is!

Later, in the 1960s, a young woman named Veronica (a Vogue model in the making) gets locked in the building with an archivist (Joshua), and they're trying to solve some Frick mysteries. This story talks a lot about race, and isn't necessarily as interesting as the first story (in my opinion, it just isn't as captivating).

Fun, exciting, but laced with tons of well-researched historical facts. Loved it. Blazed through it because I needed to know what happened to Lillian.

I really loved this one! Dual timelines worked perfectly and the mystery aspect had me turning pages as fast as I could. I even enjoyed the author’s closing note and might read some of her related reading suggestions.

Historical fiction is my jam! This book had me hooked from the beginning and excited and engrossed throughout. The twists kept me on the edge of my seat and of course when I was finished reading it went down a Wikipedia hole on The Frick Collection. Highly recommend for my historical fiction lovers!

I liked most of this book, but the ending felt rushed and predictable.

I love historical fiction, I picked this as my BOTM expecting a basic good historical fiction novel. Instead, I got a mystery with a touch of thriller and a smidge of romance. It was glorious! This book is in the running for my top ten for the year already!

Another solid historical fiction read from Fiona Davis that made me want to visit the Frick Museum on my next NYC adventure! I’ll also be looking at the statutes adorning notable buildings that much closer from now on, too. ;) The two unique perspectives helped round out the storytelling in a way that keeps me coming back to her novels & excited for future releases. Thank you to #NetGalley for my copy!
