It’s a classic for a reason. My all time favorite book thus far. A quintessential tale of romance and revenge that spans hundreds of pages and has stood the test of time as a beacon in literary excellence. Everyone should read it at least once.

Wow, this book was a ride! It’s basically broken into 4 sections. First 300 pages are super pacey, engaging and you are with Edmund Dantes and know how he is feeling and what’s happening with him. The second 300 are quite confusing, with a whole new cast of characters, setting and you are quite removed from Dantes. As you reach the third 300 page section, things start to come together a bit and you can see the web that is being woven. By the final 300 pages, the pace is back to being crazy, things are happening left right and centre!
I missed the POV of Edmund once he had become the Count, which I don’t know if this was intentional to show the complete character change he had gone through or not. There was a lot of drama, lots of things that you had to suspend a little disbelief for and characters behaving in strange ways. However, none of this really matters because the story is excellent, the Count is an amazing character and you read for so long, you are very invested in what’s happening. I loved it.

Revenge is sweet. I thought this book was great fun to read, despite being lengthy and a tad repetitive. I forgave it because it was written a bazillion years ago! The book is at its best a deep analysis of the human psyche and human desires, and at worst a summary of the typical European male fantasy of the post-Napoleonic era. Overall I enjoyed it.
