First of all, three stars means that I liked it. This is a real pageturner, every chapter has a twist and this goes on till the very last page. It's a very entertaining book but it hasn't what I usually look for in a book:
- I didn't learn anything new
- I couldn't relate to any of the characters
- I wasn't emotionally involved by the story, the events or the characters
Kudos to Dumas for his imagination because he is really able to keep the reader glued to the story thanks to many twists and turns, but I wasn't able to find more in this book. The twists were thrilling, but some events were too long to arrive to the end. I know that this book came out as feuilleton so I understand why it had the many twists and turns and some parts were too long to come to an end: the reader had to be engaged in order to buy the other newspapers with a new chapter of the book.
All in all it is a good book, but I have to be emotionally involved while reading a book. Also the characters, I felt them as background actors and not real persons, there was no depth or credibility in them. I felt them as puppets in the hands of Dumas only to purchase his aim: the count's vengeance. Only the count of Monte Cristo and the abbé Faria had more depth and credibility.
If I have to make a comparison, hoping people who love this book don't get offended, I would say it's like a soap opera full of twists and nearly hard to believe explanations of many events, with the only purpose to keep the reader glued to the story.

Kept me entertained and engaged for hours and hours and many miles of running, but probably longer than it needed to be. Great voice reading by John Lee who distinguished between the many characters well with accent and tone. Some of the plot points were a bit contrived. Need some suggestions for equally engaging audiobooks to keep me running!
