This was my first experience reading Jeffrey Eugenides and, in general, I liked it. His stories drew me right in - even when I didn't like the characters all that much. He is masterful at writing from multiple points of view - his characters are a variety of genders, ages, religious and cultural backgrounds etc. These stories were written between 1988 (I didn't like that one as well) and 2017 (my favorites). I especially liked the first story, Complainers, about an 88 year old woman with some dementia and her 70 year old friend. The last story, Fresh Complaint, is very compelling and thought provoking... and unnerving. Thank you to Farrar, Straus and Giroux for the digital ARC.

Middlesex is easily one of my top 10 books of all time. This collection was good, but not great. I detected a lot of misogynistic undertones in a lot of these stories. He could just like writing about sexist assholes, but there was enough of it that I wondered if maybe he hates women. Anyway, I really enjoyed some of the stories in here while others were only okay.

“Find the Bad Guy” made me laugh out loud, other than that the stories were unmoving.
