A look into some Maori lives 30 years ago.

Read before you go to New Zealand not while you’re there. It’ll just bumm you out💔

this is a very tough read, content wise. Duff's writing is very good though, and i think he does a good job of exploring the subject matter rather than exploiting it.

I was hoping the author wouldn't fall into the lazy trope that Maori's just need to 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps and stop blaming others for their social marginalisation. But I really feel that the white author of this book ended it on a pretty patronising note, and didn't go far enough to explore the nuances of indigenous life in NZ.

A brilliant insight into domestic violence, alcoholism, and family from within a Maori family in New Zealand. Hard to read but worth it.
