It almost seems disrespectful to give star ratings to The Iliad. It deserves five stars for its literary and cultural significance alone.

The Iliad is brilliant as always, finally starting to make sense of it more on this 4th read through. Wilson’s translation definitely adds a lot. The use of iambic pentameter is brilliant and beautiful and pays dividends when reading portions aloud. Did not enjoy the more modernized language nearly as much. The Iliad is an undeniably anachronistic text. Certain lines seem overly romanticized but can add to the text when making certain lines more succinct (especially versus my beloved lattimore translation). Overall a welcome addition to my library and the western canon

I love Wilson’s translations so much and this is no exception. Of the many, many wonderful translation choices she makes I think my favorite has to be the horse names. Every horse I ever see is now officially “Godlike Sparkle” in my head.

Even if you’ve read the Iliad before, I cannot recommend enough revisiting it with this version!

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

Zoned out a bit during the action sequences and had to re read them, but a huge fan of greek mythology and the characters and this took me back to third grade when i first became obsessed with greek mythology after learning about it during g.t. and then proceeding to read percy jackson. can't wait to read the odyssey. heard it's more adventurous and fantastical.

I shouldn't be surprised that an epic war poem is full of blood and guts, but dang!

And man are those Homeric/epic similes something to behold; they remind me of when my students are trying to hit a word count. Naturally, I now have to try my hand at one.

Like a student who, seeing his due date looms in the distance, stretches and expands his too short composition and casts his bucket at the wells of verbosity and the thesaurus, so to did Homer, mighty in poetry though weak in eyes, forge grand analogies where something simple, though ignoble, could have said the same.

Bravo! Now I know why my generation incorporated the word "epic" into our "gamers' speak."
