I just cannot say anything bad about this series. This is my favorite Ilona Andrews series, and it keeps getting better. Catalina is a very sidelined character for the first few books but she’s really shined in this book and the last. And I love how they write this slow burn relationships. Worth the wait with Alessandro.

I love this series, although I really would prefer reading about Nevada and Connor. I just don't care as much about Catalina and Alessandro, but I do love being in this world, and I didn't want to leave it. As long as Ilona Andrews keeps writing, I'll keep reading.

The first 3 books (some issues but ok) but this book destroyed the series for me. It painted Nevada as stupid (the combination code and excision) and Catalina as a child presenting to be an adult with a lone hero complex. I almost didn’t finish it. Also, they can take on huge shadowy organizations but not Victoria? BS. Also, I feel in a universe where you have illusionists, a video wouldn’t be enough to incriminate anyone. Very weak back plot. I’m not sure I’ll be able to go on with the series which is sad because this and Kate Daniels were favs of mine...maybe I’m just too old now or it.

Re-read Jan 2024- what fun to read them all again. Catalina is in a hard spot, with Victoria and Linus and their demands but she is worthy of the task.
"I was mourning the old me. For the new me to emerge, the old me had to disappear, and killing her bit by bit hurt."

Alessandro comes back after a near death experience, so we forgive him, are glad for his honesty and then feel sorry for him.
“I’m not leaving.” His voice was a ragged growl.
“I tried, because I can offer you nothing and you deserve so much more. You deserve someone better, but I’m a selfish bastard and I can’t stay away. I can’t give you up.”

And oh look! Victoria Tremaine knew all along about him and it all works out. That woman is the very devil.

A pivotal conversation between Catalina and Nevada was intense but really explained a lot.

Bug is priceless:
“Is he right there next to you?” Bug roared into the phone. “Is that spoiled moneyfucker in the room with you now, Catalina?”
----------
“Bug, I don’t have a choice. Can you do this for me or not?”
“Of course I’ll do it. Here is my price. Next time you see him, I want you to tell him, ‘Hey dickfucker, Bug is watching you.’ Because I am.”
He hung up.

Love their family dynamic:
Leon had pestered me during dinner one night, I lost control, and the black wings made their debut. The family was stunned into silence for a whole thirty seconds.
And then everyone called me Goth Princess for a week and Arabella kept leaving vampire novels by my door.

These are just some of the best IMHO :)

Re-Read 11-21, same feelings as the review below except I see more threads coming together than I did before. Excellent writing, great banter and interesting plots. Ready for the finale.

I decided to start the series over again before reading this new release. FUN!
I enjoyed it but struggle with Alessandro and connecting with him. I am glad he says he is here to stay and I love the banter with him and the family, I just hope that the HEA we are heading towards is done well.
What am I saying?
Its Ilona Andrews- OF COURSE it will be well done. They are the Masters.

So we wait. As the good little soldiers that we are. For the final book.
