My first memory of this story is my Mother reading it to me. I can remember bing absolutely captivated and wondering if we had Borrowers. I grew up in a house with floor boards that had gaps between them and I can remember looking down trying to see if we had Borrowers. I can also remember saying to my Mum, you wouldn't gas them out would you? And her reassuring me that we would not
Then when I had my children it was one of the many books from my childhood I read to them and I can still picture them snuggled up in bed listening to me read and begging me not to stop when the chapter ended.
That was twenty years ago and so when I saw it on my Borrow Box as audio I decided it was time to have someone read it to me again. I had forgotten what a brave and bold character Arriety is. Considering it was written back in the 50's I love that Mary Norton wrote a feisty female main character. Listening to it now in my 50's I can see other reasons why I loved it. Like Arriety I was an only child and I think I saw something in her longing for adventure and maybe a friend but also her love of the outdoors, and reading. She must have appealed to then just as did now.
This is probably one of those books I would pop on my list of books that have shaped me. I am sure it is this book that started my love of magical creatures and also being read to and reading allowed. I have so many precious memories wrapped up in this book in some way and the copy I bought to read to my kids is still on my shelf which is where it will stay. Maybe one day I will even read it to my Grandchildren.

If "The Borrowers" had had a rule like "The Fight Club" rule, and actually enforced it, a whole lot of problems could have been avoided.

How I loved reading this book. Since I was a child I always wanted to think that borrowers really would exist. Great story for the weekend. A must read for everybody.
More than just loving the story in this book I liked the idea of it. You had people that were smaller than a child being intelligent and resourceful and they were taken seriously. What child wouldn't love that? Plus little people who make furniture out of buttons and thimbles - it's just too cute.

This book is a little dry, but the whole idea is really interesting.
