The first Borrowers novel is a cozy marvel. A tiny family living beneath the floors of the big people house, but times are changing. The novel is about wonder and delight, but a reader can't escape from the sense of loss and fading and sadness. As ridiculous as some of Homily's stories are about the past, she highlights the current lack of community. The people are gone. Some items are running out. There's danger everywhere and no one's getting any younger. I can almost read this as a post-apocalyptic novel. The main question is what happens to Arriety when her parents are gone?
I loved the book as a child, but never got into the sequels. I own them now as an adult and may crack them open. We'll see.

Mary Norton was one of my all time favorite authors as a child and I am pleased to say that her books stand the test of time as I still enjoy them as an adult. I find her premise to be super creative and well thought out and I really like her characters. I think the books are wonderful and I also think you should never watch the movie as it's awful and shouldn't even share a name with the novels.
This is a charming story. With great use of imagination
Not. a fav out of my class assigned lit this year but an inviting and warm imaginative scope.
Awesome. I like the setting of the book better than the movie. A little disappointed the villain didn't get their comeuppance, but it's only the first book in the series. I loved the ending!
Definitely one to reread someday.

Actually kind of amazing, though the ending falls apart.
Slow start, but once it picked up, the kids liked it a lot.
This was yet another chapter by chapter nightly read with my children. I have never picked up a Borrowers book before, but found that I loved it! This little book was imaginative and had great characters in it. The girls loved it and it even had a few pictures in it to illustrate the story. We are excited to watch the animated adaptation now that we have read it!
I haven't read this whimsical little series in so long (sixteen years, can it really be that already?)
I'm almost tempted to again...

I loved this book when I was a kid. I was fascinated with how the Borrowers lived, and what they did with the items they "borrowed". it also explained where my socks went when they disappeared. :)
