The Borrowers

I really, really wanted to love this book. But I didn't. It was sweet, but a little too dry for me. Norton seemed more interested in describing the miniature world of the borrowers than in any of her characters. There didn't seem to be much a point to the book, other than "wouldn't it be cool if there were tiny, 2"-tall people in your house?" The plot was plodding at parts, the message, if it had one, was muddled (is it good to be adventurous, like Arietty, or bad, since it led to the family's downfall? is it okay to steal as long as you take only what you need and don't get greedy?). After reading the foreward, I thought this was a book that I would plan to read to my children and that we'd treasure reading together, but now I see why my parents skipped it when I was little. It's not a bad children's book, but not a great one, either.

A simple, classic read.
I really enjoyed picking this up before bed over the last few days :)
The book overall was pretty short, with only around 180 short pages, but the story itself didn't feel rushed in anyway. (That might just be because I only read a few chapters each night though.. So it helped to prolong the story)
It sort of felt like a trip down memory lane despite the fact that I haven't actually read the book before. I guess it's because I've seen the Ghibli film adaption "The World of Arrietty" quite a few times growing up.

I am so glad I picked up this book. It was an easy, quick read, but also full of story . Cannot wait to finish the series. My favorite character is Arietty, though Homily reminds me of Molly Weasley. She is your typical overprotective mother.

I think this book resonates with me because it has that classic book quality. Ready for the rest of the series!

one of my favorites as a kid

Such a children's classic.

I have just finished reading this to my little boy. Having not read it since I was in primary school, I had forgotten how old fashioned a lot of the language and descriptions were. 1 chapter in I thought it might be a bit ambitious for a 5 year old, but to my surprise and joy, he loved it. It really is the sign of a good book when the magic of the story can shine through language decades old. 5 stars from me and Sam!

I'm glad I picked up this classic from my childhood to read again. It was just as charming a read now as when I first read it.
