Despite this book being such a classic, I'd somehow managed to go my whole 22 years of life without reading it. Lo and behold, I finally got around to it. Mainly because I wanted to see if it was worth recommending to one of my students.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much this book intrigued me. I thought of it less as a dystopian sci-fi, and more of a mystery book, as Jonas slowly uncovers the amorality of the world around him. I typically trend towards very current reads, but I felt like this book has a certain timeless quality to it—still intriguing over a quarter of a century down the line. The writing is simplistic enough for kids to read, but the story has a certain magnetism to it that could appeal to people much older.
Overall, quite pleasantly surprised. Though I ended up recommending some other books to my student that are more modern and diverse, I'm definitely not opposed to giving this as a rec in the future.

It was just ok. Had me interested enough to read until the end, but story felt shallow. Not enough detail on this world Jonas lived in. No explaination for how giving and receiving memory worked. I'm fine with a supernatural explanation, I just wanted an explanation. Ending was abrupt and open-ended, but that didn't bother me much.

I first read The Giver in the 1990s when my son was assigned to read it for school. I have always loved this book but never went back to reread it. Now that the movie is coming out I thought I would see if I still liked it as much as I had then. The answer is yes. It's still a five-star-read and one of my all-time favorites. I would recommend this book to anyone -- man, woman, or child.
Pretty good book, probably would have been better if I had read it when I was younger like everyone else.
