I don't mind the ambiguous ending. Re-read years later with Eve. Zach read for school. All watched movie.

I loved this book as a child. Reread as an adult and I still love the premise and I’m still a sucker for a dystopia setting. HOWEVER- maybe it’s because it is a children’s book, now it feels half baked to me. It isn’t that that are full plot holes but more that there are SO many unanswered questions (world building as well as plot). Even more disappointing was that right as it was picking up steam (the Giver is giving more weighty memories that could expand the world and develop character) they decide to leave and the book is over!
It felt a little like GoT season 7: I’m fine with how it ended, I’m fine with a less concrete ending, but the issue is how quickly it was done and how little groundwork seemed to be leading to that destination. The book needed to be a few more hundred pages: more time with the Giver, more time setting up the world and the character choices to give depth… okay, fine, I want the book to be for an adult audience.

I wanted to love this book. I just can't put my heart into recommending it; when it didn't provide more of the “outside” world. We are left with Jonas either dead or in another spere. We are also left wondering want happen to the community without its "New Receiver". How did the community function without him? I am left with an ache of wanting to know....
