My rating is probably influenced by me reading too many World War II books in the past couple of years. It's heart breaking and tragic and cruel and redemptive. But just too depressing for me to give a higher rating.

Mixed feelings.

A truly beautiful story! Mischling describes the lives of 2 twin sisters, Pearl and Stasha Zagorski, during their time in Auschwitz in WWII and the years following the camp's liberation. As twins, the pair are separated from their mother and grandfather during arrival at the camp and are placed in Josef Mengele's Zoo, where they face numerous painful and torturous 'experiments' to the doctor's delight. The two sisters look to each other to survive their time in the camp, but begin to falter when they are forcibly separated.
Despite the fact that I've read numerous stories focused on the Holocaust and the concentration camps, this story is quite different. To start, it focuses on Mengele's Zoo, a topic of morbid fascination for many, but truly known by few. The author doesn't provide many details, but the reader gets a sense of the experiments that were performed and how these children were truly tortured while being touted as 'special'. Additionally, we see what life was like after these camps were liberated, a time where most other stories related to this topic seem to end. The author describes the death marches, the search for food and shelter, the struggle for families to reconnect, and the constant worry that, although Auschwitz was closed, were they ever going to be free? For the most part, the story is interesting and extremely sad. While the ending was slightly unbelievable, partially due to the numerous coincidences that take place in a matter of 20 pages, the reader is left with a unique perspective of this historical event and the many people that suffered. In a long line of horrific personal stories of men, women and children murdered in WWII this story gives you a view of the pain and suffering without all of the blood and gore. The descriptions in this book are perfect! It describes the loss and pain with beautiful words and feelings. You feel the manipulation and the guilt that the nazi's used. You feel the loss and the sadness that the victims felt. And you feel the anger and depression the survivors had. Everyone knows of the tortures that were perpetrated on these poor people but I don't need to read the gory details over and over. This book showed me another view of the camps that I had not learned about before. I recommend this book to anyone that reads books on the Holocaust, medical history and WWII.

I'm always interested in this subject but I absolutely hated the writing style here. This is SO OVERWRITTEN. I want to take a red pen to so much of it. I'm so glad it's over.

Harrowing but beautiful

The fictionalized story of two twins of Dr Mengele's "zoo" at Auschwitz, this book could hardly be anything but haunting and at times difficult to keep going. But the prose and the eternal hopefulness at the root of the two girls' journeys makes it worth it. Stunning and endlessly worth the difficult bits.
