I think this book is one of the best ideas of what life was like during the troubles. The troubles themselves aren’t really a main point of the book, despite being ever present. Instead, the consequences of the bombing, fighting, and allegations of being a sympathiser are focused on, as the people in the book members of the RUC, UVF, IRA or any other acronym. They’re just people. The romance at the heart of the book had me a little apprehensive due to the large age gap , but after reading I understand kennedys choice. Cushla is an extremely compelling character, and every thought she has and decision she makes is one that I could see myself making if I was in her shoes. The world she’s in is extremely sectarian, and therefore distrustful and gossipy, which shows especially in the latter half of the book. I would recommend it, but be warned it will leave you sad.

Fine book with a decent story although the point or the direction that the story takes could have been clearer. Again I felt like this could have gone much deeper into the details of what motivates the characters and why certain situations arise. Felt very cursory on information like the author purposely wanted you to not have all the details - which is fine but it came off as omitting chunks of text that would have added to the book.

I loved this but I have to admit I'm confused like..... this woman is punished for premarital sex by ruining her family business, getting a kid in foster care and KILLING a guy, so what is the message here
