This was a really enjoyable read. I loved how it often gave us very little context, allowing readers to discern the context and setting as we get settled in a scene. A heavy book.  Very rewarding read.

I really think you should have a sense of the Troubles before you get into this, as you won’t get historical context: this is more about day-to-day experiences, and understanding the bigger issues will make a difference as to what you pick up.

An interesting book set during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Some interesting relationships, familial, platonic and romantic. I wouldn’t say Cushla was necessarily a loveable main character, but she was a dynamic one. The most  memorable and touching relationship explored for me was that with her young student Davy, who you can’t help but feel so sorry for.

Showed life in NI during troubles. Thought provoking
