DID NOT FINISH: 37%

I couldn’t get into the pacing of this book. It’s well written but it felt so sluggish getting to 37%. I think I would like it if I had more Irish ties.

Beautiful prose. Particularly in the first chapter.

Brutal

A story of life in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. The main character Cushla works full time as a teacher, part time at the family pub. She is involved in a relationship with one of her random customers, who is middle aged, married and Protestant. Unknowingly, she falls victim to the war between Catholics and Protestants at that time.

The book details the conflicts and the day-to-day fracas between the two Christian communities. There is a tension sustained throughout the novel, as Cushla and Michael take increasing risks to be together.
The story powerfully shows how the troubles impacted families and how innocent children became victims of a hatred that tears families apart, ruins livelihoods and leaves
emotional and physical scars.

I did find the character of Michael  two dimensional - a stranger that you never really get to know. Like Cushla, you do end up questioning his motives in pursuing this forbidden love.

A tragic and beautifully written story.
