I was really interested about the premise of this book: its set during the Troubles in Ireland, and just goes through the daily life of Cushla, a primary school teacher as she tries to find love and live life in these times and I have to say the book really delivered for me
I didn't like how there are no quotation marks for dialogue since it always makes for a harder read, especially when all other text (eg msgs, signs, letters) are formatted differently specifically to make the reading easier and I didn't enjoy theinfidelity but I suppose it made sense bcz their relationship needed to be a secret
The way Kennedy describes living at a time like this, where in trying to do one thing you cause another problem, where young boys are recruited to fight, where people you once knew are stopping you to check your information bcz of patrol, where there's dangers of bombs, where the community is so divided, how you disagree with your own family abt what to do bcz you wna do whats right but you dont wna put ur family in danger, and above all how deeply and irrevocably change/affect your life was so fascinating to read, and I really enjoyed reading it ! I'm also glad that for once a book gave me exactly what it said it wld from the summary

didn't expect that twist !!! i think i have a very big soft spot for Irish literature but this was also very good and one of those rare moments where i actually buy a book before i read the library copy and end up enjoying it. I'm sure everyone is outraged by the lack of punctuation etc etc but whatever.

Simply wonderful! A rather conventional love story set in 70s Belfast but told with integrity and quiet, understated conviction. The characterisation is brilliant, the observations and social commentary poignant and to the point. I disagree with other reviewers that would have liked the author to treat this period in Northern Ireland history as a "contest" of violence between Catholics and Protestants. I think Louise Kennedy has done something remarkable here by interweaving the personal and sociopolitical and coming across as true and moral but never preaching or moralising.
