Some books stay with you for a long time after you’re done reading them - this is one of those books. Very powerful stories.
I’m still thinking about “Moon of the Crusted Snow” months after I read it. Waubgeshig Rice has become one of my favourite authors and I’m looking forward to reading all he has written.

Great first half, kind of becomes a bit disjointed and shifts perspective and tense when the focus of the novel shifts to an individual in the sweat lodge who disengages and leaves. While it’s interesting, it also felt a bit abrupt and odd, especially as it goes on and culminates into a sort of prescriptive parable. It would have been much stronger if it had stayed for the completion of the sweat, I feel. But after a while it did make some sense.

“Midnight Sweatlodge” begins with an FMNI winter tradition. Men and women gather together around hot stones in the middle of winter. While the warmth of the stones surround them, they share their stories. “Midnight Sweatlodge” tells four of the stories that are shared during this Sweatlodge. I gained a lot of knowledge and insight into FMNI Res life through the stories told in “Midnight Sweatlodge”. Some of the stories share certain traits, but each one is important on its own. It is a quick read that is packed with a lot of emotion, truth, and experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain more information about FMNI culture and Reservation life. It is very thought-provoking.

The stories in “Midnight Sweatlodge” actually made me quite sad. Some of the aspects of Reservation life that are considered normal should not be normal, in my opinion. After reading this book I asked my friend why drinking and abuse where so common. Why is no one breaking the cycle? Why is this behaviour being continued when it has no benefits to anyone? I felt helpless and naïve. I do not know what to do or how to help and I feel like an idiot blinded to the reality of life.

I am glad that I read “Midnight Sweatlodge”. I love learning and I love shattering my idea of life with other people’s perspectives and realities. I particularly enjoy reading FMNI books because they are relevant and apply to areas that I have lived in. I liked to stay that I am the smartest dumb person I know, because I read a lot of am intelligent, but my idea of reality does not always meet what is really going on and what is actually happening. Sometimes I feel that the education system does not have a good grasp on what we need to be taught and informed of.

“Midnight Sweatlodge” is an enlightening, quick read. The stories are short, but impactful. The writing is easy to read and the characters are interesting. My favourite story was about the white rock. I felt it had more history to it than the others. Each story was different, but similar, making the reality more striking. It is a sober telling of today’s struggles.
