This is really one of those books I read because I felt like I should read it at least once in my life. I’m glad I did. It is no surprise how hard the premise of this book is and it did make it harder to go through it, but it was soooo worth it. Lolita is a very well written book and kept me hooked for hours, wanting to know how it would all unfold.

I couldn't.
I don't care how pretty Nabokov's prose is, I don't care what he was trying to accomplish. I just don't care. I struggled to get through the first half of this book and I could do it no more. It was making me sad and angry and it was putting me in a reading rut.

I know we were supposed to sympathize with H.H., because it's his POV and all, but no, absolutely not. He's a pedophile. He's disgusting and I have no sympathy for him. Additionally, he never loved Dolores. He put her on a pedestal, never saw her for who she truly was, and never allowed for growth, because he was a nasty pedophile who r*ped a child multiple times. He is a disgusting man who projects his moral bankruptcy onto Dolores, to try and give her some blame and culpability.

It didn't work. Dolores did nothing wrong, because she was a 13 year old girl who's childhood was ripped away from her.

And if you think this book is a romance... Bombastic side eye. CRIMINAL, OFFENSIVE SIDE EYE.

i could tell from the beginning that i would love this.
absolute masterpiece
the use of words and language in this book is so betagende that i can’t even fathom that it is a translation like the work in the original language must be other worldly
i was completely attentive to this book through every page, indulging in humberts insane inner world and self justification

my one critique that upset me with this books was near the ending, luckily there was a little more added on so it didn’t just end with that but when SPOILER he murdered that guy i thought that was reminiscent of the ending of the great gatsby (which i also didn’t enjoy) and idk why i just didn’t want the book to end that way i’m not exactly sure why

overall one of my new favourites

Not like it matters, but i can't deny after reading this now that the book does deserve it's status of being a classic. And it was surprisingly easy to read! The only point that i not agree with in the general opinion is the unreliable narrator: OBVIOUSLY A 12 YEAR OLD DID NOT SEDUCE A 37 YEAR OLD. Just because he justified himself of his crime that way doesn't warrant the unreliable narrator tag. Everything else that he stated seemed quite factitious of the story. That's all. I can't believe it turned out to be such an interesting and good read. Lost of reread potential too.
Specially enjoyed the third act a lot.

Probably my favourite line from the book- "[...] since i had disregarded all laws of humanity, i might disregard the rules of traffic. So i crossed to the left side of the highway and checked the feeling, and the feeling was good."
