This book was very good. It requires a little bit of interpretation on your part. It seems to revolve around death and the after life. It includes aspects of Norse mythology. It is fun to read. I would spend a little time reflecting on it to see what it means to you.

This book was simply a joyful and playful story. No main points or morals, just an enchanting fairy story, which is edifying in its own way.

Well, they definitely don't write books like this anymore. Is that a good thing? Well, I'm not quite sure... This was so random and irrational that I'm not quite sure how to take it. It wasn't even supposed to make sense rationally. I think this must be what is meant by a book truly written for children: it's totally whimsical and crazy, but warm and comforting at the same time. No drama or tension at all. Nothing bad to say about it, just not my style I guess, but I think my kids would be bored with it, too.

The Golden Key was kind of a weird short story. A young boy hears the story of the golden key and sets out to find it. Of course he enters a forest, Fairyland (Faerie), where all sorts of odd things are liable to happen. He meets up with a companion and they travel for what is years (or just seems like years?) to find a keyhole. It is fascinating to read MacDonald's work and see the same themes over and over - forests, journeys, Fairyland.
For the record, I am not sure what the "Other Stories" are as I am reading the complete works and this review is just of The Golden Key.

Read this wishing I was reading it aloud to children. Picked it up because of Maurice Sendak illustrations, beautiful. It feels foundational, this story, one that surely has to have influenced other fairy tale writers, or maybe the author has just tapped something that feels ancient about story building.
