I just wish the stories were arranged chronologically.

Since I strongly prefer a female MC (and love these characters), I was hoping to hear from Glinda, Glamora, Ozma, or even Polychrome in these three stories. Instead I got Scare, Tin & Lion, but I actually wasn’t disappointed. Glinda and Ozma were main characters, and I love what they brought to the table. I found the first two stories in this book a lot more interesting than the last, though.

But in a place like Oz, magic and temptation lurk around every corner, the gifts from the Wizard begin to take on a life of their own...

Why do I keep reading this series...

The Tin Woodman's story was bad, but the other two were better. We get it, Glinda is bad. I guess what I like about these novellas is that they're reminiscent of the other Oz books by Baum, the ones that feature the other characters like the Sawhorse or the Patchwork Girl - except this book has the three OG Dorothy companions. I like retellings and I like Oz. I guess it's only natural that I feel oddly compelled to read everything in this series.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
Cursing is heavy in this review.
Real Rating: 2.5

This bind-up follows Dorothy's friends as Glinda manipulates them to her power. She grants them each a wish, essentially. That wish helps her to create them into monsters. Vicious killers.

Heart of Tin:
What the fuck!? The Tin Woodman is in love with Dorothy in the story. The Tin Woodman is a grown man win he is turned into tin. Dorothy is a 16 year old girl. It is strange and perverted. It is seriously fucked up. The fact of the matter is, that is the entirety of the story. You aren't changed by anything else. The only good part of the story is when Glinda grants his wish. He becomes a ruthless killer to impress Dorothy. The wish happens within the last 10 pages, so you don't get time to like his ruthlessness or get used to it before we jump into the Scarecrow's story.

The Straw King:
I don't mind this novella. The Scarecrow is on the throne and it shows the story of him being thrown off of the throne. There's nothing else to it. It shows him seeing the brutality being brought to Oz. He fights with the army of the flying monkeys and the Lion's army. He gets angry that no one wants to listen to the King and they have more respect for the Lion than the do for the Ruler of Oz. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a GREAT novella.

Ruler of Beasts:
This was the best novella in this bind-up. The Lion is bored in his kingdom. Glinda tells the Lion to go get a necklace from the palace to cure his boredom. He does so, but he develops a friendship with Ozma. This friendship is genuine and beautiful. Then they go and "battle" the Nome King. They win and get the necklace. The necklace has a power that Glinda wants. Glinda knows when they have the necklace and Ozma battles her. She banishes her to a land with the necklace. That's how Glinda makes the shoes and sends them to Dorothy. It was the most genuine and beautiful novella in this bind-up.
