This book was so brilliant but so confusing, I think the chaos added to the violent girlhood however.

Reading this book aged me 10 years. Could not tell you what happened and who these characters are. Teenage girls are weird.

The craft of the writing by Tate in Brutes created such a powerful atmospheric stage for the story that unfolded. The switching of the narration across chapters from individual characters to the first person plural, built a sense of cultish foreboding.

I found the gentle creep of events whilst maintaining this environment of strain and resistance very enticing. It really sucks you into the world. I occasionally struggled to hold in my mind all the characters sense of individuality, which on one hand I think deliberately heightened the sense of group and pack, but sometimes made me lose the thread of who was who.

I borrowed this audiobook using the Libby app from my local library. Support your local library!
