really cool concept but the whole thing was too much of a secret for me, made it hard to really care about what was doing on. whole lot of nothing but maybe some interesting commentary on girlhood and friendship and the fear of being alone.

maybe i’ll read it again in three years and have a better appreciation for it.

Disclaimer that there is very little plot here and much of what there is is very heavy in allegory so if that’s not your thing, maybe give it a miss

Um well I can’t say I really fully understood what was going on half the time but looking at the reviews, it seems everyone else had no clue as well which makes me feel a little better. Can you really say a book was good if you don’t even know what was happening? no clue. This was definitely more of a no plot just vibes book but it had some sort of underlying plotline but it didn’t really make sense / was very had to follow. I found the chapters in which the story was told from the collective ‘we’ and ‘us’ very hard to follow because I couldn’t tell who was involved in the story, or who was talking to who. Because the book follows a group of like 8 girls it’s so hard to keep up. Sliced between these collective hive mind chapters are chapters about an individual girl told in first person usually sometime in the future once they’re grown up, and these chapters were much easier to follow. I found myself beginning to really look forward to them because it was interesting to read what they were up to now. I also found the setting really confusing which added to my struggle to understand what was happening. They mentioned they live in apartments/condo’s but they also reference they live near ‘the construction’, the highway ‘Falls Landing’, the lake, the display home and they climb over ‘the wall’ a few times which seems to be very controversial. Oh and it’s set in Florida… sooooo yeah I’m confused.

I did think the author did a really good job at capturing girlhood and what its like growing up with your closest girlfriends, causing mischief, keeping secrets and sneaking around. The way the book is written encapsulates the same feelings of nostalgia I have for my own childhood. When I was reading I felt the same feeling of when I try to recall a memory - that weird haziness pretty much sums up this book perfectly.

Quotes I Liked:
-‘Like guardian angels, we watch politely from our windows, but the searching women do not seem to want to bless the place. There is judgement in every move they make.’
-‘Is this it? We asked. Are we having fun like they have fun? Are we in love like they are in love? We filled up our days following them, watching them, waiting to be invited in. We ran from the truth that the answer was in the question. We were not, and never would be, satisfied.’
-‘He still calls me sometimes. For a long time, I didn’t understand why, but now I think that to humiliate a woman is the only way some men know how to love.’

I really enjoyed the writing in this weird book.

I was going through my tbr and this was the lowest rated book on my shelf and now I can attest that this was the dumbest book I’ve read

No clue…just vibes.

But the girlhood vibes?! Immaculate!

I can’t rate this book cus I was nowhere near smart enough to understand any of it. Interesting vibes though and I like books that make me think but this made me think way too hard.
