Very atmospheric and I sped through it, but I don’t think this is something I’ll really think all that much about as time goes on. Interesting exploration of girlhood, but I don’t think I fully understood what was going on or what was being said.

falls maybe a bit below 4 stars, but it's very atmospheric and surely one of those books i wont get my mind off of very soon. the narration in first person plural was such a choice. i loved it, it works so well. touches so well on that fear of. not just loneliness, no. a fear of singleness, of being singled out, of singularity. of personhood. you know i love when PERSONHOOD is discussed.... being a person is a scary endeavour. beyond a need and a desire for affection, validation, attention, love, whatever else we get from our interpersonal relationships, it's that sense of belonging that we crave so much. we want to be part of a WE. the girls in this book move like an organism, there's something so whole about them that it feels wrong to read their individual chapters as grown-ups. and when one gets singled out in some way in the teen-aged narration, it is so intensely lonesome. there's so much interesting sociological commentary on this communal personhood these girls create for themselves, and the way it applies to not just them, but the world. everyone and everything exists in relation to their WE. and the fact one of the girls is a boy, i love that. because beyond girl being able to be its own gender, it becomes itw own age category, its own class, its own type of personhood. and a girl, in this book's world, is a pack animal. it's really a way of looking at girls that i can't describe as anything but.. brutal. they are brutes, they travel in packs. they act as one organism, one brain, one body. they Share so much.
it's a confusing book above anything else, you never get much to satisfy you about this whole mystery, but i guess that's female adolescence for you. there was a lot i loved conceptually about this book
