In the Ledge, Dawsyn fights to survive the merciless cold and hopes to avoid the Glacians, a race of half-winged creatures that give the people rations in exchange for sacrifices every year. This year however, Dawsyn is chosen; desperate to escape, she finds an unlikely ally in half-Glacian Ryon and together they traverse into the world below the mountains. But that world might not be so forgiving either, and with the Glacians on their trail, Dawsyn must continue to fight.

A book that intrigued me with its premise but ultimately left me disappointed. I couldn’t quite pinpoint why, but the book felt like a struggle to get through despite its short chapters. The setting was interesting, but I found that it didn’t feel rich or even ‘big’ because it was as though Dawsyn and Ryon were getting from one end of the continent to the other in the span of a day. I thought the Ledge itself was more interesting than the rest of Terrsaw, which was unfortunate since we spent the least amount of time in the Ledge.

As for the characters, I unfortunately did not feel attachment to any of them; Dawsyn was fun and I loved her unbridled anger but at the end of the novel I didn’t really catch any character development or any depth to her other than her being an unforgiving, angry ax-wielder. Ryon was fine, but likewise, I didn’t have any major feelings for him or any of the side characters either (except maybe some curiosity about Baltisse). I’m sure they’ll play a bigger role in the sequel but they had little impact here.

Speaking of, the book left on a major cliffhanger though which had me reeling, but it’s a question of whether I’m going to remember this by the time the next one comes out next year.
Although, in all honesty I don’t think Ryon is dead, or at least going to stay dead.
There was some clear set up for the next book and I think I can see where this is going, which does excite me but again, I’m not sure whether I’ll keep reading.

Overall, not entirely bad but not good either. I can definitely see why fantasy-romance enjoyers may like this, but it was personally very mediocre and apart from the ending, it just didn’t provoke any big feelings or emotions for me.
