I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read it closer to when it was released. It relfects a world that is no longer the one we live in, social mores have changed a lot. It is not terrible and is easy to read, with many sweet moments.
The essays were not as enjoyable to me as some of his other collections (kindergarten is still my favorite), but there were some good ones - in particular the story of the couple from different sides of the religious track - heartwarming.
I didn't enjoy the book that much. Although sometimes it was funny, often I felt as if the author was trying too much and deliberately prolonged and jibbered on for nothing. The whole book could be 20 pages long and it would be okay.
I remember my mom found this book in my room when I was in sixth or seventh grade (I had stolen it from my grandparents house) and FLIPPED OUT. She never did give it back to me or bother to find what it actually was about (much less apologize). She just thought the title was naughty and reflexively banned me from reading it. Ha! I didn't mind much- I had already read it like 20 times.
This is Fulghum's second book, following closely on the heels of his first, a bestseller. In fact, at the same time that Everything I need to Know was #1 on at least one best seller list, It Was on Fire was #2. This was the first in the list’s history that the same author had the #1 and #2 books on it at once.
Like his first, this is a collection of heartwarming essays, full of homespun wisdom and thoughtful reflections on life and living. It is a wonderful book to read over a Thanksgiving or Christmas break, when one's thoughts almost naturally turn to life's blessings. As with his first book, I found it impossible to read without pen in hand to take notes and underline insightful passages.

This collection of short stories made me laugh, think, and cry. It's an exploration of the human condition, but is rich and lovely instead of being clinical and dry. And while not all of the stories spoke to me, the vast majority did.
