'Bad Machinery #2: The Case of The Good Boy' is a strangely named volume since there are no bad machines (though this is the name of the webcomic), and I'm not sure what the case might be referring to. What you will find, is a charming collection of hilarious characters that live in a world where occasional strange things could happen.

There is a series of disappearances and a strange large beast lurking in the woods. There is a magic pencil at a fair that must be won. Apparently whatever is drawn with the pencil comes true. When Mildred draws a strange picture of a dog, it seemingly shows up at her house. Combine a strange new pet, a series of mysterious disappearances, young love, and some really funny dialogue and you have a quirky, fun story.

John Allison's writing is fun. It took me a few pages to get into the rhythm of the dialogue, I really enjoyed it.

I was given a review copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.

Since it said on the cover that this was a webcomic initially, I expected a joke-a-page format. This comic does not have that format. It had a well-formed storyarc like a good graphic novel should! Also, it's British, which was initially a little confusing and then charming. It's a slightly magical story of some teenagers who interact to solve a mystery. They quip intelligently at each other, and it is amusing.

Easily one of the best webcomics out there, with plenty of UK "flavour" to appeal to those Anglophiles out there. For the rest of you who want a heartwarming story about growing up and also about solving mysteries in the raddest way possible, you can also get your fix.

For those who want heartwarming crime-fighting but without an English setting... well, you're hosed, because I don't think you can find that anywhere.

Checklist for the second volume of Bad Machinery:

Precocious middle school kids solving a bizarre mystery? Check!

Wonderful dialogue mixing snarkiness, deadpan humor, and innocence? Check!

Goofy artwork with strange looking monsters? Check!

Work published in a floppy softcover 12.5 inch by 9 inch format that cannot be held open easily, must be laid flat on a large table for reading, and cannot be shelved spine out with any other of my books? Check!
