Anchee Min's memoirs of her life during the cultural revolution provides interesting insights into the hostile political climate of that time. I'm glad I read it, especially because I never really knew about about Madam Mao, but it didn't touch my heart and wasn't as moving or capturing as other books that explore Asian history.

Amazing memoir. No complaints. Just sadness at how hard life can be.

This book broke my heart a million times, but now I have a better understanding of faith, courage and true strenght. A fascinating true story about growing up and mentally surviving under the regime of the chinese communist party. The author made me feel her heartbreak, her love, her courage, pride and sadness with her. I have never been so moved by a book. It's so inspiring and teaches you how to survive every hardship life throws at you. And as the cherry on top: you get history lessions, I have never been more interested in the chinese history and culture as I am now, after reading the book

I LOVED this book! There's drama, there's history, there's a love story or two. The details of what it was actually like to live during China' Cultural Revolution read like a dystopian YA novel. Why hasn't this been made into a movie yet?? Perhaps it's because the main character is bisexual. Just one more reason to love the book!!!

Compelling story!

Autobiography of her youth in China as a member of the Red Guard. Choppy writing style works well here. 3.5 stars.
