The further and further I progressed through the stories, the more and more I enjoyed myself. Capote was a master story crafter. I especially enjoyed Miriam, Master Misery, House of Flowers and all of the stories involving Buddy and Sook. He is quickly able to develop these characters into people you care about or want to know more about... and the reappearance of characters/details/themes in various stories (actually written over many years) brings a cohesiveness to the collection.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE Capote's stories! A Christmas Memory is one of our favorite tear producers each year, and his early story - Miriam - was one of the best Adult Storytime sessions I ever did - just a the kind of subtle, overwhelming horror you find in Shirley Jackson or John Collier.

A streak of pain runs through these, which taken together achieves the silvered tragedy that characterizes his greater accomplishments.

Liked some of the stories, didn't like others, and skipped a few altogether.
