'Rolv bedacht hoe weinig troost er was voor iemand die zo radeloos was als hij, hoeveel hij ook had gestudeerd en nagedacht en gezwoegd, en wat hij ook allemaal belangrijk gevonden had en belangrijk gemaakt had. Op dit moment leek dat allemaal niet op te wegen tegen zulke simpele zaken uit je kindertijd als de nabijheid van een groot, stil paard dat zijn hoofd boog in het donker.'
