Absolutely harrowing. I'm floored. The terrifying lows this woman has experienced and the peaks which she has climbed in spite of it. Stunning.

I was blown away by this memoir and Tara’s incredible journey. At the beginning, I thought that this book would mostly be about her issues with her family, and while that is a major part of this book, it was also interesting that she spends so much of it talking about how deeply she loved her family. Families are challenging, no matter the circumstances.

Brutality in the name of a righteous god who only commands through men.

I was so excited to read this book because the intersection of fundamentalism and educational neglect is a special interest of mine.  However I was disappointed to discover that instead of a reflective text on the effects of education (or the lack thereof), the book was a memoir of all sorts of abuse, neglect, and familial discord.  It was a well-written and interesting story, just not what I expected at all.  For a text that purports to be centered on education, we hear very little about the texts and ideas (beyond lists of philosophers' names) that actually fascinated the author and made a difference in her thinking.

I'm probably the last person to come to this memoir but what a WILD story! Tara Westover's resilience and overcoming adversity in her upbringing was astonishing to read. It definitely makes you reflect on education as an essential need, and the lack thereof is abusive to children. My only qualm was that I wish she got more in-depth about how she overcame in her schooling. It felt like she went from failing classes to gifted brilliance, and I wish we got more of a look into what she did with her studies to become so successful. It can come across as her just being naturally gifted, which I know isn't the full story. But wow, what a crazy story and enjoyable read
