In the end, I really liked this book and was glad the main character found a quiet and comfortable joy. At first,I was convinced I was reading about miserable events unfolding around miserable people, in a writing style I could barely stand. It turned out Proulx has a great way of describing things and that her choppy style stopped registering after several chapters.
