Annie Proulx

3.72 AVERAGE

There was not enough of anything for my liking. The prose was good and the characters fine, but this book felt too much like too many others, just with a particular brand of Canadian paint on top. Not a bad read, but not something I will remember.

Great characters and a gripping storyline.

Ms. Proulx creates magic with words and can do the unimaginable with sentences. A joy to read.

As I sit through the next few months of my life a bit aimlessly while nothing happens, I hope to turn to books to distract me. Unfortunately, the first book I happened to choose was one where someone moves to Newfoundland and sort of sits there aimlessly as nothing happens. It got to a point where when I told the person who recommended this book to me and she asked me where I was at, I could not tell her because it felt like nothing really happened. The recommender said she appreciated the characters and the subtlety of the writing, but I did not get that at all. Maybe I'm just dumb because when reading fiction I need the narrator to very clearly tell me what is happening and they didn't do that in this book, but I found it to be 300 pages of basically nothing.

I wanted to love this book. I saw the movie a billion years ago and remember loving the movie. As I read the book, however, I couldn't remember one thing about the movie (other than it was in Newfoundland, had Julianne Moore, and something about with cold, wet weather). I honestly started to question if this was the same thing.

I liked the book. But I can't honestly say what I liked about it. I didn't hate it, either. The writing style was so different... the sentences were so jilted and fragmented. It was almost disconcerting. We didn't get to know the characters (other than Quoyle) enough to actually understand or like any of them. What we did know of everyone just made it hard to find those redeeming characteristics and want to cheer for any of them. I felt like it was a chore to read a lot of the book. Just when I thought we were finally getting somewhere and I was enjoying it, the book ended. It ended rather quickly, too.
