A fantastic read. The characters are interesting, the setting is phenomenal, and the writing style is unique and engaging. I've read this 2 or 3 times now - most recently this past July - and I'd gladly read it again.
I love this book. She is a poet. Will write more later.
Fascinating character-driven story with a quirky plot line. The best part is Proulx's insightful metaphors, and he precise but unexpected character development. The ending is simple, finding a love without pain, but the journey there is amazingly unexpected. The only downside is that it's a hard book to get into, Quoyle is not an immediately likable or sympathetic main character. But he becomes so, especially after he moves to Newfoundland.
Compré este libro de segunda mano en un mercadillo de mi pueblo, simplemente porque me gustó lo que contaba la contraportada. No sabía nada de la autora, ni había leído nada de ella antes. Después, buceando por San Google, leo que es la escritora de la novela en la que se basó la peli "Brokeback mountain", que no acabé de ver porque me pareció una pesadez, y que "Atando cabos" recibió el premio Pullitzer en el año 2004 . Teniendo en cuenta que hasta "La carretera" de Cormac McCarthy no había sido consciente de haber leído ningún premio Pullitzer, pues ya es mucha casualidad.
Esta novela está protagonizada por Quoyle, un tipo raro, casado con una mujer que le engaña desde el primer día, con la que tiene dos hijas. Su mujer muere en un accidente de coche y él, junto a su tía, a la que hasta el momento del accidente no conocía, decide trasladarse a Terranova, la tierra de sus antepasados. Allí consigue un trabajo como periodista y amigos, de los que carecía en Nueva York. Así las cosas, parece asentarse con sus hijas, su tía y una vida al fin encarrilada.
Pero cuesta adentrarse en el libro, se hace lento y espeso a veces, y cuando se va animando, acaba con un final pasteloso y azucarado que no le pega absolutamente nada al resto de la novela. Vamos, que cuando me quedaban diez páginas, estaba deseando acabar para empezar a leer otra cosa, que se me estaba haciendo eterno.

This book is a slow burn. Magical prose, and description of life in Newfoundland. Quoyle’s two timing wife meets a tragic end and he knows he needs to start a new life. His aunt suggests they take his two small children and return to the family home in Newfoundland -a place on which he’s never set foot.
Is it possible for them to build a life that doesn’t involve pain or misery? We meet an unusual cast of characters that help Quoyle, his 2 daughters, and Aunt Agnis figure out life and set down roots. Rich, humorous, heartfelt. Proulx has a gift of engaging the reader and making us a part of their world.
I love this book . I marvelled at how she could weave a tale that tugged at my heartstrings ,made me laugh , gasp, and had me on the edge of my seat. Wondering what would happen next in this town and their lives.

Been avoiding writing a review, but this book was not it. There was so many ways I thought the plot was going to go, but it never ended up going anywhere. I guess it was a way of showing daily life for a family, but it really dragged on for being a 300+ pg book
