Saw this title was on several worst/most hated book lists. I probably wouldn't have finished it if it hadn't been for a book club, but I honestly appreciated a lot of the characterizations and I loved the funeral of one thought dead...and not dead. ;-)
The movie was sweet but terribly miscast so don't base your opinion on that alone.

It was awful but I think the last few chapters were bearable. If you like confusingly written non-stories with no climax then this is the book for you!
I thought this was a great book and even a good movie! I read other books by her after but this was my favorite. I loved the characters and couldn't believe the mother.

it hasn't taken me this long to read a book in forever, but man i'm really glad i read this and took my time with it. beautiful, beautiful writing (of course) and not easy to read at all, but immensely worthwhile. proulx's writing feels like you can rub it between your fingers like dirt or sand. i don't want to leave newfoundland or these characters but reading this felt like digging my way out of them. definitely a satisfying finish.
Really good. Unexpected. Sweet story with little bits of humour.
Expertly written, a masterclass in austerity and economy of words. Proulx nails sense of place, whether it’s the harsh shores of Newfoundland or the open sky of Wyoming. The story moves quickly in a staccato rhythm. I found it hard to be invested in some of the side characters and plotting, but Quoyle is well drawn. Overall an excellent book, as evidenced by the shelf of awards it received at the time.

I have never hated a book more. One of the few books I've started and never finished because it was so terrible. And I know several people who called this book life-changing. Again, I have to question the company I keep.
A wonderful atmospheric read with heartfelt descriptive details and its own subtle melody.
It is a shame the innocent and wronged main character and his no-good-at-all ex-wife were so black and white and were diminished to plot devices. All the other characters (aunt, daughters, collegues, neighbours, the crazy cousin etc.) rang true to me, with their interactions beautifully interwoven.
