This book still fell short for me. I found myself reading just to finish rather than reading to find out how it resolves. She lent enough life into some interesting characters but the never utilized them to create an interesting story. Her strangely lyrical yet choppy style of writing kept my fingers crossed for this book.

This is a fantastically well-written book: 5 stars on that. But the first third was extremely depressing and the second third was boring. So I never made it to the last third.
What a wonderful book. The writing took me to a place I have never been (and dream to go) with characters full of life and mystery. I would recommend this to everyone to read!
I read this many years ago and loved it. I do remember that it was a bit confusing at first, then it all falls into place. Her other books were never so wonderful as this.
This is a bleak and stark novel. The atmosphere is bleak and the characters are too. There are moments of brilliant writing but this book is hard to pull through as there seems to be a very subtle climax at the end. Thematically I can see why this book has won awards, as the themes of love and family pervade the novel. Not a fun nor easy read.
I tried so hard to like this book, but it just never grabbed me. I put it down and picked it up a few times and at this point I've cut my losses and moved on to other novels. I do know a few people who loved this book, I just wish I was one of them!
It's about time I read this book that's been on my shelf for years! Took it on vacation and thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters.
