Annie Proulx

3.72 AVERAGE

very entertaining. Proulx is a master at creating oddball characters and placing them in nearly absurd situations. her attention to detail about life, in this instance, of the fishery of Newfoundland is remarkable.

This book took at least 100 pages for me to get into, but I read the last 100 or so pages in one sitting. The language of this book took some time to sit right with me. At first it seemed a little too precious, a little too forced and overly florid, but as the characters settled into their new life in Newfoundland, I found I settled more into the language and it fit the story, the landscape, the weather, and the characters.

This book came highly recommended to me. It is one that you should take your time on so that you can get lost in the story. Prolulx' writing manages to fully engage you Quoyle's life. It is like you are on this journey with him trying to find what home really means.

This book is a revelation, and I'm only sorry it's taken me almost 30 years to read it.

2.5/5

I was thinking yesterday about the unforgettable last line of this book, "And it may be that love sometimes occurs without pain or misery." And of the lasting impact it had on me. One of these days, I'm going to re-read the whole thing.

ugh...reading this book was like swimming through molasses...the story itself wasn't bad; i just didn't like the writing style. fragmented sentences. choppy writing. long-winded characters. glad to finally turn the last page...

Moved into one of my 'all-time favs'!!!

I was THERE! Annie Proulx's selected 'style'....her dialogue and description was like nothing I have ever read before. It was ....PERFECT, for the story and the locale....for the WHOLE enchilada!

Unique!
hopeful reflective sad medium-paced

I've heard nothing about this, but the title pops up every now and then. It's quiet, slice of life, but very personal and preceptive. I enjoyed the setting in Newfoundland as well, that was unique.
