Love love love the way this starts out so awful and sordid and slowly coalesces into something beautiful.
Read this (originally) on tape, and it was very good.

Reread in 2019 again on audio book, but not the same narrator. A woman read the one I listened to the first time, I don’t know who, and this one was read by Paul Hecht. It was not as good as the first one. But still very good book.

I have read this book twice - once on my own and a second time for a book club. I enjoyed it much more the second time because I could relax, whereas the first time I couldn't enjoy it because of the sense of foreboding. No doubt it's got it's gloomy aspects, but the straightforward, unflowery writing keeps it from becoming too maudlin.
