This book was slow to start and hard to get into. At first I thought it was going to be another book about a buffoonish fat man like A Confederacy of Dunces. However the characters quickly evolve from caricatures. The style at first I found off putting and confusing, but it became more comprehensible as I went along. An interesting read, though I was expecting more after all the awards it received.

This was a lovely read, or listen since I listened via Hoopla. The story good along quickly and it’s a vignette of Newfoundland and it made me want to live where it is truly chilly again. I found the writing to be nice as an audio book, but did have to go back and re-listen at one point because my mind wandered too much and I lost track of the story- it gets going in the second half of the book.

It kept seeming the author was about to dump her characters into big pits of horribleness--but she never did. She let her characters show some spine, reach out to love, and catch a break. My favorite genre: flawed, unlucky characters who appear to have nothing going for them but who find happiness through love in unlikely places.
