Annie Proulx

It isn’t overly exciting or action-packed, but it provides beautiful & vivid imagery about the uniquely spectacular Newfoundland. I feel a curious connection to the place after reading this book and that’s what captured my heart the most. There is something comforting yet haunting about this book, and it feels like it would get better after reading it again.

Poetically written, and impossible to put down. Absolutely loved the little knot chapter headings, and the little symbolic surprises. Unfortunately for my tastes the ending was a bit trite.

The punctual style can be difficult at first as Proulx is setting up (or tearing down) Quoyle's life in a series of punchy sentences. But if you stick with it, the narrative will reveal a story of touching madness and awkwardness. Quoyle isn't necessarily a likeable character, but Newfoundland and all those newfies sure are. And Billy Pretty.

I absolutely adored this book!

The style and story both were captivating and I found myself constantly engrossed in the book! It came highly recommend to my by my English teach senior year (Thanks Mrs. Genre!) and I'm glad I listened. The book was full of surprises and constantly kept me searching for answers!

I wish I could give half stars because I would love to give this 4 1/2...I leave out the other half only because it was lacking something for me to make it 5 stars. I feel like something is/was missing but I can't put my finger on it, if I think of it I will update this review!

From one Deering Grad to another, job well done!

this was a story that was charming and dark, grotesque and sentimental, thoughtful and fleeting….i had a lot of feelings. loved it. will be looking for more Prioux, her style was so unique and captivating and i have such a soft spot for love stories to small towns and weirdos - which she did the utmost justice to in Shipping News.

Annie Proulx is an excellent writer, but this didn't have much of a plot. I wish I had saved myself the time and watched the movie instead.
