It took me two tries to fully read this play. I started it, got halfway through and tossed it aside. I wasn't in the right mindset to fully appreciate the play. Read it again on a long car ride from beginning to end. The mother figure is morose and tugs on your sympathy strings. O'Neill realism isn't exactly my thing, but I felt it was a classic I needed to finish. Every good theatre major should read at least one thing by O'Neill.

O'Neill requested this book not be published until twenty-five years after his death, that is how shameful it was to speak of family or personal ills. It makes one grateful that we are finally learning to talk about addiction, mental illness, and suicide. Long Day's Journey finds heavy resonance with readers who love someone in the struggle.

Reading this play is like watching somebody cry.

Incredible play! Such powerful emotion behind each character that one would have to be heartless not to be forced to connect with their experience.
