Feh. Admirable. Accomplished. Deeply annoying.

Fearless, gutsy, and offensive in all the right ways. I admire his willingness to go to the dark places.

Solomon Kugel, his wife, Bree, and their young son Jonah flee Brooklyn for a farmhouse in an undistinguished town in upstate New York. Kugel is plagued by neuroses, fears, paranoia and guilt. There is an arsonist torching historic homes in the area, his mother clings to a concentration camp experience that she never had, a disgruntled tenant threatens to walk and Anne Frank, yes, that Anne Frank, resides in the attic. Anne Frank is now grizzled with age and is a cranky narcissist obsessed with the sales figures of her memoir. Auslander's first novel is funy, shocking and provocative.

Loved the writing style, story was a bit long winded for me though

I really enjoyed this one. I've love Auslanders other works and this doesn't change my opinion. He made me laugh at things that really shouldn't be laughed at... Death, the holocaust etc. Recommend

Parts were laugh-out-loud hilarious, but other parts dragged on and could have been edited out.

I happen to read this at a weird time. I chose it off my shelf because I identified with the voice and wit immediately, but upon further reflection, reading this while studying the Holocaust for a class was a poor choice, and made the whole thing darker for me. I'm sure it would have gotten four stars if I had read it any other point in my life.

I would give this one 3 1/2 stars if I could. As a die-hard optimist, I am surprised I liked this book as much as I did. It is seriously quirky, weird and absurdly funny in a twisty way. I am dying to know the author and ask, wtf?
