I started reading this as an agnostic and finished it as a revert. I have read the Bible and was feeling curious to read The Quran just to see what it was about. I had been inspired by the faith of the Palestinian people as I often heard them say things like “God is sufficient for me” or “God is great” as they were experiencing the greatest of suffering. I didn’t understand what they meant and had never seen faith like that before. I was not looking for religion but subhanAllah, Allah guided me.
If you’re curious about religion in general or Islam specifically I really recommend this version of The Quran because it explains some historical context around the Prophet’s PBUH him life, as well as some common translation strategies which may at times skew the meaning of certain passages. It gives context to the Arabic language and how some words mean multiples things, as well as other grammatical differences that help the reader understand the complexity of the original Arabic. This version was very accessible and easy to read as a native English speaker (I don’t speak any other languages), and it was modernized in such a way that made it very digestible. I cannot recommend checking this version out enough if you are curious. It answered questions I didn’t even know I had about the nature of life, suffering, and evil.

There's some cool stuff in here but some themes may need to be debated accordingly/interpretation.
The Quran itself is an interesting religious text, but repetitive and not much of a page turner (and that's from some who majored in Arabic and has lived in the ME). My three star rating comes from the translation and the notes from the translator more than the Quran itself. I was not a fan of reading such a modern English version of an important religious text, for example, terms such as 'winners' and 'losers' feels quiet childish and would sound more professional if words such as 'saved' and 'damned' were used (a little nitpicky, but I did not like it).
My main issue was the footnotes in the book. Some of them were very helpful and offered alternate translation or directed to other parts of the Quran, others were what seemed like dogma laden information with no citations or information to support it. Perhaps these are from the Hadith (though the translator does a good job at pointing out when they are), but likely they are part of the Islamic tradition and not based in the Quran itself. I would have preferred to have read the Quran without all of the commentary and read a separate book about Islam that deals more strictly with dogma and beliefs that have developed over time.
All that being said, I believe it is very important to understand religious traditions, especially one as global as Islam. So, I would recommend to all to take some time and become familiar with Quran and its teachings.
