Very much enjoyed these imaginative retellings of favourite fairy stories and legends. Cunningham gives each of them a contemporary spin, and their characters a psychological depth, so that they seem relevant all over again to our adult lives. The writing is beautiful, and gently humorous. The illustrations add greatly to the experience. This is a book I would buy as a gift for friends.

I absolutely adored this collection. Cunningham retells classic fairy tales with a pointed focus on characterisation and new perspectives. Snow White is goaded into returning to the glass coffin by her Prince in "Poisoned" as the Prince enjoys the recreation of the peacefulness and simplicity of those days, "when [he] was perfect, because [he] didn't exist." My favourite story of the collection is that which focuses on the witch from Hansel and Gretel - telling us her life, and her experiences: adding depth to the shallow caricature of the original fairy tale. "Crazy Old Lady," is told in the second person and therefore not only gives us a deeper portrayal of the witch, but also allows the reader to directly consider events from her perspective. Dealing with ageing and isolation, Cunningham deftly upholds the opening statement: "It's the solitude that slays you." Aside from the multiple other tales included here, the book also contains striking illustrations by Yuko Shimizu - with each story accompanied by an image just as beautiful and creative as the writing itself.

This is what I was hoping for with Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber. Cunningham poses all the sensible question adult readers would bring to fairytales, while still finding a magical, life-affirming way of answering them.
