Michael Cunningham uses the most beautiful language and imagery in this retelling of fairytales. Each of his stories are less a linear tale or journey than a story of what the characters felt during these stories. It is almost a series of instructions on how to live life, or an observance of how lives are usually lived: we do not go through life looking at it like a story, we go looking at it with every range of emotion. Cunningham has captured this way of living in each story.
I will say some retellings were unexpected. The one that caught my attention most was his retelling of Beauty and the Beast, titled "Beasts". In this we find that the human form of the beast is more terrifying than the beast itself. I find that an extremely insightful look into human psychology. For Beauty, the tame life is no life for her, and she finds herself more wanted when she is with the beast. But when the beast sheds his skin, he sheds his decency and his caution, and it is implied that Beauty has gone from the safe to the completely unsafe version of her world. There is no saying which is the better world, there is only that she has gone from one to the other. And, like most transcendences, there is little chance of turning back.

Έχω που λέτε μια αδυναμία. Δεν ξέρω πότε το κατάλαβα πρώτη φορά, ούτε πως μου συνέβη. Δεν έχω κάνει κάτι ιδιαίτερο για να θρέψω αυτή μου την αδυναμία, είναι η αλήθεια. Δεν ασχολούμαι ιδιαίτερα με αυτήν, απλά υπάρχει στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού μου. Αλλά μου αρέσει να μαθαίνω για βιβλία που αφορούν την αδυναμία μου και όταν πέσω πάνω σε κάποιο θα πρέπει να το σηκώσω, να το ξεφυλλίσω και αρκετές φορές να το διαβάσω ολόκληρο.

Θυμάμαι με αγάπη το πως πέρασα από μια χούφτα με τα παιδικά παραμύθια που μου αφηγούνταν και που διάβαζα, στους μύθους της εφηβείας και στα ενήλικα, μοντέρνα παραμύθια της [a:J.K. Στοιχεία του βιβλίου που ξεχωρίζουν; Η άγρια φύση των παραμυθιών που ξεκλειδώνεται μέσα από την υπέροχη πρόζα του συγγραφέα, το σεξ και το χιούμορ/κλείσιμο ματιού στον αναγνώστη που βρίσκονται σε κάθε ένα από τα 11 διηγήματα αλλά κυρίως η διαστροφή στη ματιά του δημιουργού που ποτίζει το κείμενο και αλλάζει την οπτική μας στις οικίες ιστορίες που όλοι ξέρουμε από παιδιά.
Ένα απολαυστικό, γρήγορο ανάγνωσμα, ένα βιβλίο που πραγματικά χαίρομαι να υπάρχει στο ράφι μου. I'm such a huge fairytale fangirl that I was sure I was going to love this, even if it wasn't great. If only just for the joy of reading retellings and themes that I'm so fond of.
This was my first Cummingham and, alas, it will be my last. This was...not good. It kind of perturbed me the whole way through and it's hard to pinpoint exactly why. The way he wrote certain things, certain details, and particularly the way he wrote women, made me get this gut feeling that I wouldn't like him very much as a person. Many bits made me feel icky. That's what this whole collection was for me: a combination of bland unremarkable retellings and a large spoonful of icky.
I don't mean to say it was obviously awful or offensive or anything of the like. But it didn't gel with me at all. The tone was off-putting, a little self-important. And honestly I didn't think any of these stories were particularly imaginative or well executed.
This book's saving grace is Yuko Shimizu's absolutely stunning artwork. Worth a flip-through at the very least just to experience that.
