I have tried to read this book many times over the years, but always stalled early on - I managed to power through the slow beginning finally, and once I did I found it very enjoyable! The magic system is very crunchy, but I personally like that sort of thing, and it was explained enough times to begin to be easy. Quite a few unexpected twists that had me gasping, but they feel obvious in hindsight because of foreshadowing, which is fun! I liked the characters, though I think in general they are weaker than the plot. Excited to see if the sequels maintain the tension, and I'm SO interested in finding out more about the future antagonist!

Simply incredible storytelling. It's epic fantasy, but now it's a heist, but now it's a YA novel with balls and nobleman falling in love with the common girl, but now it's epic fantasy again.

I wish I could read this again for the first time.
